Thermohaline interleaving induced by horizontal temperature and salinity gradients from above

چکیده
In the Ocean, thermohaline intrusions and interleaving layers occur within water mass fronts with horizontal temperature salinity gradients, which provide an important mixing mechanism. Here we report a new type of intrusion is driven by gradients in fluid at adjacent depths due to different double diffusive rates vertical direction. Once established, share similar behaviors as those found gradient regions. Such process generates extra heat fluxes towards cold fresh side, but transfer density anomaly warm salty side. These findings greatly extend circumstance where may be observed.

Doubled power density from salinity gradients at reduced intermembrane distance.
The mixing of sea and river water can be used as a renewable energy source. The Gibbs free energy that is released when salt and fresh water mix can be captured in a process called reverse electrodialysis (RED). This research investigates the effect of the intermembrane distance and the feedwater flow rate in RED as a route to double the power density output. Intermembrane distances of 60, 100,...

The Gibbs free energy of mixing dissipated when fresh river water flows into the sea can be harnessed for sustainable power generation. Pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) is one of the methods proposed to generate power from natural salinity gradients. In this study, we carry out a thermodynamic and energy efficiency analysis of PRO work extraction. First, we present a reversible thermodynamic mod...

متن کاملThree-dimensional double-diffusive Marangoni convection in a cubic cavity with horizontal temperature and concentration gradients.
Three-dimensional double-diffusive Marangoni convection in a cubic cavity is studied in the present paper. Both the temperature and solute concentration gradients are applied horizontally. Direct numerical simulations are carried out for surface-tension Reynolds number 10≤Re≤500, surface-tension ratio -2≤R(σ)≤1, and Lewis number 1<Le≤200. Symmetry-breaking pitchfork bifurcation is observed, whi...
